Environmental protection at SoGB

SoGB have decided to remove 1 511 hectares, almost 5% of the concession, to create four protection zones.

SoGB is highly sensitive to the issues of environmental protection and the needs of the civic society. SoGB works closely with surrounding communities to maintain good relations, but also to help in the preservation of certain ecosystems.

SoGB have decided to remove 1 511 hectares, almost 5% of the concession, to create four protection zones. These zones are important areas of biodiversity and home to several different ecosystems including: secondary forest, lowlands and rocky escarpments. These are all seen as high conservation value areas.

Residents and workers of SoGB understand the value of these ecosystems and there is very little historic degradation (mainly old food crops). SoGB worked closely with communities to designate these areas and thereby ensuring acceptance and effetive protection by all. All human activities (agriculture, forestry, hunting) have ceased except rare visits to monitor compliance and levels of preservation.

In anticipation of any adverse impacts to food crops, SoGB has reserved land outside these protected areas for workers to cultivate.

Agenda 21 (adopted at the Rio Conference in 1992) calls for better land use, intensification of agriculture and increased protection of biodiversity. This is an example of how Agenda 21 can be successfully implemented by a private operator.
