In the midst of the Corona pandemic, businesses and other economic activities have all ground to a halt. In fighting to contain the spread of the Corona Virus in Sierra Leone, private sector players have been playing active parts in supporting the Government.
Yesterday, Socfin Agricultural Company in partnership with Kissy Industry donated 4,000 gallons of palm oil and 50,000 Protect Medicated Soap to Government through the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). “We find it necessary to make this donation as our support in the fight against this pandemic and as our contribution to the welfare of the people of Sierra Leone. We are presenting these Made in Sierra Leone oil and soap as local industries, Jamel Shallop, Managing Director of Kissy Industry said.
Speaking at the donation, the Acting Coordinator of the Emergency Operations Center, Brigadier Kellie Hassan Conteh, said they would make the best use of the donation as it will be used by the people who need it most.Brig. Kellie Conteh said the demand for soap in rural areas is high as people find it hard to access it.
He said food items are critical at this time; therefore, he called on the private sector to follow up such a venture in the fight. He promised to showcase the good gesture to His Excellency the President Dr. Julius Maada Bio as a way of showing transparency and accountability.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Hinga Sandy, said that for the first time, there has been a collaboration between two ministries; Trade and Industry and Agriculture and also two local industries; Socfin and Kissy Industry, which has seen the smooth facilitation of the donation. He said that local industries have shown the impact they can create during moments of national crisis.
Representing Socfin, Madan Eyullah Emmanuel Fillie, said that Socfin came on board to donate because they believe in supporting the Government in every capacity for the well being of Sierra Leoneans.
Amar Kamara, the Executive Chairperson for the Commercial Agricultural Producers and Processors Association (CAPPA), said that plans are on the way for Socfin to bring in medical supplies. With a good and friendly investment atmosphere, Sierra Leone and her people will benefit from Foreign Direct Investment.
